While none of these events has been linked to terrorism, security\nofficials have expressed concern that terrorists may seek to acquire and use higher powered lasers\nto, among other things, incapacitate pilots. There is also concern among aviation safety experts that\nthe ubiquity and low cost of handheld laser devices could increase the number of incidents where\npilots are distracted or temporarily incapacitated during critical phases of flight. Possible options\nto mitigate the threat of lasers include restricting the sale or use of certain laser devices; amending\ncriminal statutes; providing pilots with laser eye protection; expanding and enforcing laser free zones\naround airports; and educating the public regarding the risks of lasers to aviation safety. On\nDecember 12, 2005, the House passed H.R. 1400 , a bill that would establish criminal\npenalties for aiming a laser pointer at an aircraft or its flight path. This report will be updated as\nneeded.", "type": "CRS Report", "typeId": "REPORTS", "active": false, "formats": [ { "format": "HTML", "encoding": "utf-8", "url": "http://www.crs.gov/Reports/RS22033", "sha1": "7f2e78c9488555e5d91d9e681d35df85c8c197bb", "filename": "files/20051221_RS22033_7f2e78c9488555e5d91d9e681d35df85c8c197bb.html", "images": null }, { "format": "PDF", "encoding": null, "url": "http://www.crs.gov/Reports/pdf/RS22033", "sha1": "3d5b208b15edc95f4ed6c5d3d7b5b12edb7b3fa5", "filename": "files/20051221_RS22033_3d5b208b15edc95f4ed6c5d3d7b5b12edb7b3fa5.pdf", "images": null } ], "topics": [] }, { "source": "University of North Texas Libraries Government Documents Department", "sourceLink": "https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metacrs6329/", "id": "RS22033 2005-01-26", "date": "2005-01-26", "retrieved": "2005-06-12T14:12:20", "title": "Lasers Aimed at Aircraft Cockpits: Background and Possible Options to Address the Threat to Aviation Safety and Security", "summary": null, "type": "CRS Report", "typeId": "REPORT", "active": false, "formats": [ { "format": "PDF", "filename": "files/20050126_RS22033_8cab28f826e033e4ad3ac0eaef3597ccfb0865a4.pdf" }, { "format": "HTML", "filename": "files/20050126_RS22033_8cab28f826e033e4ad3ac0eaef3597ccfb0865a4.html" } ], "topics": [ { "source": "LIV", "id": "Transportation", "name": "Transportation" }, { "source": "LIV", "id": "Lasers", "name": "Lasers" }, { "source": "LIV", "id": "Commercial aircraft - Security measures", "name": "Commercial aircraft - Security measures" }, { "source": "LIV", "id": "Technology", "name": "Technology" } ] } ], "topics": [] }
