Thailand is a key U.S. ally in the international war
against terrorism and is an important U.S. economic partner in Southeast Asia. Thailand continues
to rebuild its economy after the debilitating effects of the 1997-1998 Asian financial crisis. In
October 2003, the United States and Thailand announced their intent to negotiate a free trade
agreement (FTA). Six rounds of negotiations have been held A number of issues remain to be
