Summary
This report identifies selected Web sites for maps of Iraq. Selected government,
library, and organizational Web site addresses are provided. Maps of the Middle East,
Iraq, Facilities Used by U.S. Forces in the Gulf, and USG Humanitarian Assistance and
Reconstruction Activities in Iraq are also provided. This report will be updated as
needed.
Map Sources
Basic static maps of Iraq and the Middle East region are provided below. Map
resources are arranged in order of approximate usefulness, and resources are subject to
change.

This Web site is a product of the BBC. Key maps are presented on “Military build
up,” “UK forces,” “Iraqi bases,” “Iraqi missile range,” “Dissident areas,” “Iraqi oilfields,”
“Baghdad,” “Weapons sites,” and “Presidential palaces.”

This CNN Web site offers maps on Iraq, to include weapons of mass destruction
(WMD) sites, Iraqi military, political, terrain, population, oil fields, regional, palaces and
the U.S. and coalition forces.
HIC Humanitarian Information Center for Iraq: Security Maps
[http://www.agoodplacetostart.org/security.php]
These U.N. security assessment maps show security levels of Iraq, land mines, and
other safety hazards. The purpose of the maps is to raise awareness of security hazards;
they are not records that have been verified as accurate. The maps are extremely detailed
and may be difficult to read online.

ReliefWeb

The ReliefWeb site is a project of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of
Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and offers information and maps on areas of the world
requiring humanitarian relief. Maps of Iraq located on this Web site include “USG
Humanitarian Assistance and Reconstruction Activities in Iraq,” “Iraq: UN security
Assessed Areas,” “‘Permissive’ areas in Iraq,” and other maps of general interest.
Perry-Castaneda Library Map Collection: Iraq Maps

The University of Texas Web site offers a variety of maps, including many maps
from the Central Intelligence Agency. It also has many historical maps and provides links
to Iraq maps on other Web sites.
National Geographic Map Machine
[http://www.nationalgeographic.com/maps]
This Web site offers “printer friendly maps” of many countries and provides a wide
variety of geographic information on the nations of the world.
Library of Congress Geography and Map Reading Room Online Map Collections
A limited selection of CIA maps are found at the Geography and Map collections
Web site. These are historical collections covering the years 1500-1999. The division’s
Places in the News [http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/gmdhtml/plnews.html] site features
a limited number of Iraq maps.
Central Intelligence Agency Maps
[http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/mapspub/80.shtml]
The CIA creates maps of various parts of the world but does not make them available
for viewing on the Internet. Purchase information is provided at this site. For the best
selection of CIA maps, visit the Perry-Castaneda Library Map Collection site above.
National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA)
NIMA has produced unclassified maps of Iraq, Baghdad, and the Middle East. These
are very large graphics, and they download slowly. They can be viewed at
[http://www.nima.mil/ocrn/nima/srg/index.html]. Printed copies of the maps are
available through U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) by calling 1-888-ASK-USGS.
